Welsh immigrant Samuel Jones made his way to the Pennsylvania oil fields in the 1860s and his keen mind helped him get rich on some of his patents. In his own factory, in 1894 he decided to employ the Golden Rule as his managerial standard.
He introduced an 8-hour day, a $2 minimum wage, a cooperative insurance scheme, kindergarten, a cafetaria offering hot meals for workers and a park for workers with a hall featurung progressive speakers.
He served four terms as mayor of Toledo where he would often chair night court and dismiss most cases of petty theft and drunkeness. He fined himself and all men in the courtroom to pay bail whenever prostitutes were being arraigned.
Crime fell dramatically in his terms and when he died in 1904 nearly 55,000 tearful people streamed past his coffin. Lord, send us more like him.
