Angel of Hope

According to the Carbonear Compass, 83-year-old Enid Barrett of Bishop’s Cove, Newfoundland, qualifies as an Angel of Hope.

This four-time cancer survivor brings faith and cheer into the lives of cancer victims in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The dreaded disease struck Enid first at age 54 when she needed a mastectomy and served to activate her and her husband’s Christian faith.

“We believed God was going to help us. We never once doubted.”

Then came 1989 and her second mastectomy and second victory. Ovarian cancer struck a few years later and then an operation for cancer of the bowel.

Her faith remained solid. As she told the doctor before her second surgery: “I have to say one word, Into Thy hands, O Lord, and now you can do what you like.”

Her volunteer work on donating hand-made “angels of hope” to stricken victims and her collecting work for the Canadian Bible Society garnered her a Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. Even into her eighties she raised $50,000 selling cookbooks for the Canadian Bible Society.

“I believe God is always there to do something,” says Enid. Her life proves it.
