'Chinese Jerusalem'

The erudite Yale historian Niall Ferguson (pictured) unbashedly reports on the rumored revival of Christianity in China in his dazzling monograph "Civilization."

"Christianity is thriving in China," says Ferguson, "because it offers an ethical framework to people struggling to cope with a startlingly fast transition from communism to capitalism."

Wenzhou with 8 million people now has 1339 churches with pen manufacturer Hanping Zhang a leading "boss Christian" in China's most entrepreneurial city – "the Chinese Jerusalem."

Religion fosters trust and social cohesion, says Ferguson, a lesson Anglo-Americans once knew and practiced.
