But, all too typically, his inner man was deteriorating even as the outer man racked up amazing success. Abused as a child, a product of a broken home, Santana was ripe for the snares of a cult leader who caused him to detour from authentic spirituality.
Near suicide seven times, Santana looked at a picture of Jesus and said, "Help me."
The answer which came led to his baptism and an ability to forgive the man who had harmed him. "Forgiveness,man, forgiveness is extremely liberating," the Christian rocker now tells all who will listen.
