Anne Douglas

In 1992 Anne Douglas, wife of actor Kirk Douglas, raised up a Shelter for Women tied to the downtown Los Angeles Mission.

Seeing how women were not being helped effectively Anne said, "I prayed to God to help me raise some money."

She contacted her husband and his friends and now the shelter has a residential center for 28 women, a day center with showers, a closet stocked with donated clothing, a computer center and a gymnasium.

Maryalice Freeman lived in a cardboard box for 10 years and is now assistant chaplain at the facility.

Though she eventually joined her husband in the Jewish faith, Anne Douglas showed she had already grasped what the Christian faith was all about (LA Times, 5/1/16).
